Located in Zhengzhou International Cultural‑Creative Industrial Park, Zhengzhou Haichang Ocean‑Park is one of the largest ocean‑cultural‑tourism complexes in Central‑Plains China. The park contains six major themed venues including Polar‑Aquarium, Dolphin‑Show Arena and Sea‑Lion‑Show Arena. Integrating marine‑animal performances, amusement‑facilities, leisure‑vacation and commercial services, it has become a landmark cultural‑tourism destination for central‑China and greatly promotes local tourism‑economy development. As core performance buildings, Dolphin‑Show Arena and Sea‑Lion‑Show Arena can accommodate 2,500 and 1,500 spectators respectively. Their roofs adopt large‑diameter circular welded‑ball steel‑grid structure, with the maximum roof‑diameter reaching 72.7 m. The large‑span column‑free indoor space provides excellent viewing conditions for audiences.
The circular large‑span grid roof features complex shape, huge quantity of members and dense welded joints, bringing major construction challenges in 3‑D positioning accuracy, ground block‑assembly, high‑altitude hoisting, closure‑unloading and deformation monitoring. The indoor marine‑exhibition environment remains humid for long‑term operation, where water vapor and corrosive mist may erode steel members and welded joints. Customized multi‑layer anti‑corrosion and fire‑protection measures are applied to grid members, welded‑ball joints and support bases, to slow down steel‑structure corrosion and guarantee long‑term roof safety. Subject to large seasonal‑temperature difference and variable snow‑wind‑load in Central‑Plains region, BIM construction‑simulation and mechanical‑checking are carried out in advance to predict stress and deformation risks during hoisting, lifting and unloading processes, ensuring overall structural stability.
We undertook the large‑span steel‑grid roof construction for Dolphin‑Show Arena and Sea‑Lion‑Show Arena, covering detailed design of circular large‑span space‑grid, factory fabrication of steel components, shot‑blasting anti‑corrosion coating, on‑site block assembly, segmented hoisting, high‑altitude welding and integral grid‑unloading. Strict quality‑control was implemented on component precision, ball‑member connection tolerance and non‑destructive‑testing of high‑altitude welds. Real‑time deformation monitoring was performed during hoisting and unloading phases. We successfully overcame construction difficulties of super‑large circular grid roof and delivered high‑quality steel‑structure works, contributing to the construction of world‑class ocean‑tourism landmark in Zhengzhou.
